Soliton Excitations in Polyacetylene and Relativistic Field Theory Models*

چکیده
A continuum model of a Peierls-dimerized chain, as described generally by Brazovskii and discussed for the case of polyacetylene by Takayama, Lin-Liu and Maki (TLM), is considered. The continuum (Bogliubov-de Gennes) equations arising in this model of interacting electrons and phonons are shown to be equivalent to the static, semiclassical equations for a solvable model field theory of self-coupled fermionsthe N = 2 Gross-Neveu model. Based on this equivalence we note the existence of soliton defect states in polyacetylene that are additional to, and qualitatively different from, the amplitude "kinks" commonly discussed. The new solutions do not have the topological stability of kinks but are essentially conventional strong-coupling polarons in the dimerized chain. They carry spin (1⁄2) and charge (±e). In addition, we discuss further areas in which known field theory results may apply to a Peierls-dimerized chain, including relations between phenomenological q~4 and continuum electron-phonon models, and the structure of the fully quantum versus mean field theories.

Solitons in polyacetylene and relativistic-field-theory models
Using recent results on a model relativistic field theory, we find explicitly a new solitonlike solution, essentially the conventional strong polaron, in the continuum interacting electronphonon model of a Peierls-dimerized chain such as polyacetylene [(CH}„].This solution is in good agreement with recent numerical simulations in a discrete model of (CH)„. %e discuss further areas in which know...
متن کاملTopological effects and particle physics analogies beyond the massless Dirac-Weyl fermion in graphene nanorings
Armchair and zigzag edge terminations in planar hexagonal and trigonal graphene nanorings are shown to underlie one-dimensional topological states associated with distinctive energy gaps and patterns (e.g., linear dispersion of the energy of an hexagonal ring with an armchair termination versus parabolic dispersion for a zigzag terminated one) in the bands of the tight-binding spectra as a func...
متن کاملExcitation Dynamics in Disubstituted Polyacetylene
We studied the excitation dynamics in films of disubstituted polyacetylene, a degenerate groundstate conjugated polymer, using psec transient and steady-state spectroscopies. The polymer is found to support charged and neutral topological soliton excitations concurrent with a strong intrinsic photoluminescence band with quantum efficiency, h . 50%. This leads to stimulated emission in thin film...
متن کاملThe TBA, the Gross-Neveu Model, and Polyacetylene
We summarize recent work showing how the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz may be used to study the finite-density first-order phase transition in the Gross-Neveu model. The application to trans-polyacetylene is discussed, and the significance of the results is addressed. In this contribution, rather than simply repeat what is contained in the literature, we should like to attempt to place this work i...
متن کاملSemi-Phenomenological Analysis of Dynamics of Nonlinear Excitations in One-Dimensional Electron-Phonon System
The structure of moving nonlinear excitations in one-dimensional electronphonon systems is studied semi-phenomenologically by using an effective action in which the width of the nonlinear excitation is treated as a dynamical variable. The effective action can be derived from Su, Schrieffer and Heeger’s model or its continuum version proposed by Takayama, Lin-Liu and Maki with an assumption that...
